Annual General Meeting

Friday. One week after camp. That would be our annual, well, Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Unfortunately, we were able to start voting only after the afternoon session went off to the hall. After watching the video clip made by the (just then) Ex-Cos, we still had a little more time left so we got through pretty much all the other videos of camp. We also had a little prize-giving session for the job we did with naming the plants around school and giving them a miniature board. Kit Yan and Hui Qing won.

Finally, the moment was here and with suspense and laughter, we were told the results, starting from the bottom. Here’s the list:

Teh 2010 Camp to Dusun Eco

Lunch packets and luggage dangling by our sides, we made our way to the petrol station where the bus awaited our arrival—well, that was what we thought. The bus came late.

Everyone was on our way to LAS Camp 2010. We eventually do make it to Dusun Eco, our camp site. After settling down in our designated hall and bundling our bags at a corner, we started the ice-breaking session by introducing ourselves. This was followed by several games, one of which was not unlike Bingo. After the enjoyable session, we stowed our bags in our cabins and returned for the treasure hunt which was to function around the hall. From math questions and drinking bottles of carbonated drinks from conjoined straws, we did it all, with some teams working faster and more efficient than others.

We were supposed to go jungle trekking in the, well, jungle after dinner but it just so happened to rain. So, instead, we had a change of schedule and it was decided that we had talent night now. After nearly two hours of discussion, practice, creativity and teamwork, the teams were set and ready to perform. But then again, that was never the case. There were team performances with moments that ranged from pure genius, creativity and greatness to plain ridicule, shock and awkwardness. One thing could be said about everyone though: we impressed the audience. Pole dancing and solos were everywhere. It was an amusing night but it was getting late so we retired to bed.

Next morning, we gathered near dawn and ate breakfast before making our way to the obstacle course. Word of the wise: this year’s camp activities are rather extreme compared with the previous one and even those further back from what I heard. This is somewhat pointed at the obstacle course. With higher walls to scale and steeper angles to climb, fall and balance, everyone was challenging themselves at least a little. Those who once believed they were unable to achieve such great heights (a little literally) received much encouragement from friends and reached the end of the line with claps and whoops. A highlight of this year’s obstacle course was the mud and (clean) water we had to crawl through, some scrapping themselves in the process while the guys got mouthfuls of pale brown water.

After that was the flying fox, an essentiality for any one camp. Before that though, we had to walk on the Vietnam Bridge. With the combination of cable set far apart and a dizzying drop, it was not particularly what one would call the ideal bridge. Oh, we also lacked any safety gear. But of course, the staff knew what they were doing. To ensure the customers’ safety, there was a safety net and even planks to rest on if one got too queasy. The flying fox was not as extreme as the bridge but it was still a blast to zip down with a friend by your side. Sometimes, there might even be strangers waving and cheering from below.

Once everyone was through with lunch, we had a little break to change into fresh clothes and clean ourselves up a bit if we wanted to. It was recommended that we simply squeezed off the water from the crawling though. We were about to play water games and after that, things were going to get messy. The two water games we enjoyed were simple. The first one involved everyone holding three balloons and, with everyone out for themselves, balloon-popping. Laughter and squeals sounded in the shallow pool as balloons exploded. Suddenly, there was a cry and someone shouted “snake!” Those in the pool were quickly ushered out safely and the snake pointed out. With a few calls and (very, very unfortunately) the killing of the little black serpent by a staff, we resumed our activities. The next game was not unlike Eagle Catch Chicks (literal translation), which was something the Ex-Cos had not noticed. It was a while later that a long line of “fishes” were formed and captured, with Brenda the swimmer successfully evading the “fisherman”. After the games were over, everyone was left to his or her own devices in the pool and just enjoy themselves with splashes. Once everyone was eventually out, we went out back and started the flour game, in which everyone had at least a little flour on them. Flour was thrown on heads, bodies, and clothes and even inside that. We were allowed to have a short free-tossing session after the game ended as we still had flour left. As it started to rain, we quickly made our way back to our dorms for a shower before the barbeque dinner.

Turns out, the barbeque dinner did not exactly entail “cook your own burnt food and hope to not burn down the place”. Instead, it was more like “eat the barbeque food we made and keep away from fire”. But one has to admit; the food was good and compensates for us not doing it ourselves. Besides, they could not really have let us build a real fire and risk seriously burning something down. Not to mention the extra air pollution from the smoke if we had done it ourselves.

After the dinner was jungle trekking. We briefed on the standard stuff. You know: no shining your torchlight at the trees, no loud talking, do not use one another’s real names, no retracing your steps once in and all that. Real non-ominous/creepy things. It was extremely tough though; even the guys had their struggles. It started simple enough with us going up and down gentle slopes. After a couple checkpoints though, the tough got going. We were going downhill at about 80 degrees of an angle with only ropes and trees to cling onto and the nooks and crannies formed by the constant passing of feet. The majority of us were sweating rather profusely. On top of that, it was drizzling, which did not particularly improve the condition of the dirt ground. In fact, it simply made the ground muddier and slightly slippery. At the end of it all, we turned up at the other side of the resort. Everyone was beaten and exhausted, ready to retire to the cozier interior of their dorms, but there were fans of (you guessed it) World Cup eager to watch the match between Argentina and Germany (I think). Just a while after we were sent off to bed, someone came back reporting there was a snake near the dorms. After some time, it was taken care of by the staff of Dusun Eco.

The next day, we had abseiling and repelling. The abseiling part happened to be just us climbing up the stairs to the top. Not really abseiling but, at that height (about three stories), it was half the challenge. Two of the most memorable people in action seemed to be Yee Teng, who went down in about thirty or less seconds. The greatest one however, appeared to be Brenda, who made her way down in twenty seconds. After that, we had the closing ceremony in which people won prizes like “most sociable”, “most talented”, “best camper”, all that. Prizes from games were also distributed. After that was packing and returning to school.

To sum things up, it was pretty darn great.

The End of our Recycling Campaign

Our Recycling Campaign for year 2009 has come to an official end!

We thank all CHS-ians for your support -- and are particularly impressed by classes who have managed to bring above a hundred kilograms of old newspapers! Without the contribution of every student and the heart to go green, this campaign would not be as successful as it is.

To those classes who have made huge contributions, your effort will not go down the drain, because you guys will be well rewarded :)

The habit of recycling our old newspapers should be practiced often, and not only during the duration of our campaign. We hope that this campaign has succeeded in instilling environmental values in you and bringing awareness concerning recycling issues to all of you in CHS.

Be prepared to beat your current record when we host this campaign once again next year! We look forward to seeing all CHS-ians work together for the sake of Mother Nature once more!

LAS Trip 2009

All right, people! We will be having our LAS Trip again.

To those who have missed out on the fun last year, you can join us this year!

We promise you guys plenty of fun and games -- ALL UNDER RM100 !!

The afternoon session will have to miss a day of school, which is on Friday -- it is up to yourselves to decide whether it is a good thing or not ;)

Earth Day

Earth Day falls on the 22nd of April annually. This modern environmental movement was celebrated since 1970, and was founded by Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator then from Wisconsin. He proposed the first nationwide environmental protest "to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda. " "It was a gamble," he recalls, "but it worked."

On April 22, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment. Denis Hayes, the national coordinator, and his youthful staff organized massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.

Thus, Earth Day united people who were fighting valiantly for the survival of Earth and our future generation, and is still an even celebrated annually till today.

IMPACTS OF 2°C GLOBAL WARMING
ON ANTARCTIC PENGUINS

A new study commissioned by WWF which combines state-of-the art climate models with latest scientific knowledge on penguin ecology clearly demonstrates that Antarctic penguins are in jeopardy. The research shows that 50% of the colonies of the iconic Emperor penguin and 75% Adelie penguin colonies face marked decline or disappearance if global temperature is allowed to rise 2°C above preindustrial levels. 2°C global warming could be a reality in less than 40 years; reduced sea ice coverage and thickness would make it increasingly diffi cult for some penguins to
hunt and to breed1.

Global warming and Antarctica

Although far from the centers of human population, Antarctica has important relevance to human-caused global warming. Over the past 50 years, human activities - burning of fossil fuels and the clearing of forests for agriculture - have led to large-scale changes in the global climate, including altered wind patterns, increases in air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice and global sea level rise. The Antarctic Peninsula is among the regions that is warming the fastest and the melting of its glaciers is contributing to global sea level rise.
Not only does Antarctica play an important role in the global climate system, it is also home to unique species which are found nowhere else on Earth. Whales, seals, penguins
and other seabirds thrive on abundant, fi sh, krill and other plankton in the Southern Ocean. Lichens, mosses and bacteria can be found in the coldest, darkest, harshest parts
of the continent. These species are part of our planet’s rich and biodiverse heritage. They enrich and infl uence the culture of human civilization and continue to capture the imagination
of generations.

50% of the colonies of the iconic Emperor penguin and 75% Adelie penguin colonies face marked decline or disappearance if global temperature is allowed to rise 2°C above pre-industrial levels.

Conclusions:

Currently, approximately 50% of Emperor penguin colonies, representing almost 40% of the total world population, as well as 75% of colonies and about 70% of the total world population of Adélie penguins exist north of 70° S. The signifi cant lessening of sea ice projected at these latitudes by 2025-2070, should have negative effects on these colonies3. Therefore, by the time
mean global atmospheric temperature rises to 2°C above pre-industrial levels – a possibility that could take place in fewer than 40 years - we can expect major reductions and changes in the abundance and distribution of pack-ice penguins.
The only way to significantly reduce the risks of climate change in Antarctica as well as globally is to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Scientifi c fi ndings are clearly showing that emissions reduction must be much stronger than currently planned if dangerous global impacts of climate change are to be avoided4. Even with ambitious emission cuts, however, damages will be large: any impact that occurs below a global atmospheric temperature rise of 1°C is now
unavoidable. It is imperative that action is taken to conserve ecosystems in their changed environment and help them build resilience against the effects of climate change. Research shows that depleted ecosystems have the least resilience to changing climate.

Fish Pond Cleaning Report

The last contribution of LAS before the school holidays was the fish pond cleaning activity. It was held on 15 August 2008 (Friday).

We did a number of things on that fateful day. In short, we cleaned the fish pond, remove excessive algae and replaced the murky water with fresh, clean water, and in the process, killed a few fishes too -- But more of that later.

We began by catching the fishes from the pond. LAS owns one fish net that could barely hold a koi, nevertheless a Bandaraya. Therefore we opted for the traditional method, which is by using our bare hands to catch the fishes. However, we did improvise a little by using a wire netting to 'trap' the fish in a corner before scooping it up with a pail. Or catching it using the hands-on method whenever the pail method proves to be unsuccessful.

Ingenious? Hmm.. you'll have to judge us on that.

The process was tiring and occasionally frustrating. It was very trying for the LAS members though. Catching fish isn't as easy as it seems. Still, it was accomplished eventually. The fishes were situated in pails whilst the cleaning process went on. Algae and moss were scrubbed, and the ancient bird statue was repositioned in order to ease the cleaning process.

By then, the fishes were already surfacing for oxygen. It was a worrying sight indeed.

The exciting part has barely begun. We are only just about at it.

Sorry to be a disappointment, but the story ends here. We'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Casualties: 4

It was the largest number in LAS history and was very, very daunting indeed. Still, there's room for improvement. Keep up the good(?) work, guys (and girls)!

The annual LAS gathering was held on 3 August 2008 (Sunday). Our gathering began with a short introduction by our Program Department head, Lee Shu Ying.
